Pregnancy Induced Hypertension - Overview

PIH (pregnancy induced hypertension) occurs during pregnancy and is a type of high blood pressure.  Pregnancy induced hypertension is also called toxemia or preeclampsia.  PIH is known to occur in younger women, women who are giving birth to multiple, women who are pregnant for the first time, women with chronic hypertension and women who have diabetes.

When women have PIH, numerous symptoms will develop.  First, their blood pressure will become higher than normal.  Second, there will be a trace amount of protein in their urine.  Finally, they may experience swelling in various parts of their bodies. Usually, doctors will detect PIH and then provide treatment so that it does not affect fetuses.

For women that have eclampsia, it can be much harder for both mothers and babies.  This is due to the fact that eclampsia is a very serious from of PIH which is known to cause seizures.  In most cases, people will not know that they have eclampsia till the very end of their pregnancies, which is when this condition commonly develops.

Pregnancy Induced Hypertension and Birth Injuries

Women who have PIH must be carefully monitored as this medical condition could adversely impact the health of their babies.   When women have pregnancy induced hypertension, their blood flow may become hindered.  This means that blood supply may be cut off from the women's vital organs and during pregnancies, blood supply could be cut off from women's placentas and uteruses, resulting in babies not growing or stillbirths.

Anytime PIH is not diagnosed or correctly treated and women's babies are affected, they should consider discussing their cases with skilled birth injury lawyers, such as the lawyers at the Law Firm of John Whitfield.  The Law Firm of John Whitfield is committed to holding medical professionals accountable for their negligence.
